More than a dozen ports and dozens of ships have been affected by another wave of strikes that have affected freight forwarders heading to Sweden and India.
Sweden: a massive strike by dockers will affect 15 ports
Swedish container ports are said to have been paralysed by a massive strike by dockers following a dispute over union representation.
A spokesman for the Swedish ports union said about 1,000 longshoremen had taken part in a three-hour strike. The employers' group at the Swedish ports has escalated the conflict into a major work stoppage because of the massive blockade.
"In port Malmo, the strike last Wednesday was three hours from seven to ten in the morning, but the lockout lasted from seven in the morning until 11:59 in the evening, all over the country. The strike is scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday. There will be a three-hour strike at ports across the country."
The ports affected are Gavle, Gothenburg, Helsingborg, Holmsund, Karlshamn, Malmo, Stockholm, Soderhamn, Sundsvall and Umea. If no agreement is reached, the strike will spread over the next few days to a total of 15 ports, including Stockholm and gothenburg, the country's largest.
Unrest sparked by a port blockade in Sweden as dockworkers went on strike
▼ AFP: a strike by dockworkers in Sweden has closed ports and businesses are worried about delays

"We gave notice of the strike because we wanted to sign a national collective agreement (CBA) with Swedish ports, where we organise about half of the dockworkers," the spokesman explained. The Swedish transport workers' union (STWU) already has a CBA. "
Mediators recently reached a compromise agreement after more than two years of dispute between the Swedish transport workers' union and the port company. Mr STWU, however, objected, fearing that he would be shut out of future local negotiations.
▼ container terminal in gothenburg, Sweden
Peter Winsten, STWU's secretary, attacked the Swedish port workers' union as "irresponsible". "What they are doing is affecting Swedish longshoremen, Swedish imported goods, Swedish export industries, and in the long run, if there are more goods on the road, it will also affect the industry," he said. Workers under the STWU's collective bargaining agreement were not affected by the lockout, but Winsten said previous disputes had led to widespread layoffs at terminal operators like APMT.
APM Terminals, which operates container facilities at the port of gothenburg, lost more than a third of its staff in 2017 as workers moved to neighboring ports in large Numbers due to ongoing labor disputes. That year, the port's throughput hit an all-time low, with volumes down 19 per cent. Last year, it reported a 17% year-on-year growth, but a 2% decline from 2016.
India: a strike by mooring workers at the port of Haldia has stranded more than 30 ships
Nearly six ships have been stranded in the southern Indian port of Haldia, 50 kilometers southwest of kolkata, since Monday morning because of a strike by mooring crew, according to a notice issued by port authorities.
Another 28 vessels are said to be waiting at Sandheads to enter the port of Haldia, and shippers have also been affected. Most of these ships carry dry bulk cargo, including coal from Australia and manganese ore from South Africa. Three container ships carrying coastal cargo were also stranded.
Trade sources said the continuing impasse could lead to goods being moved to nearby ports such as Paradip, Dhamra or Vizag.
The strike in haldia port has been losing rs 600 million a day since it was halted
"We hope to resolve the impasse overnight," said a senior official at kolkata port trust (KoPT). KoPT may bring in workers from the kolkata docks if the standoff continues, he added.
About 60 mooring crew members refused to work Monday morning, according to the official. The standoff began when KoPT officials notified some employees to be absent after they signed in.
"When a ship left port on Sunday night, the gate moorings refused to work because there were not enough people present. Checks showed that 19 men had signed attendance records, but only eight were on duty. "The port official said.
In the first nine months of this fiscal year (april-december), Haldia's cargo flow increased by 12% to 33 million tons, compared with 29.2 million tons in the same period last year. On the other hand, cargo volumes at kolkata's terminals were flat at about 13 million tonnes between April and December.
